Local Ordinance Teams(LOT) of CT

This Team is key in the Chapters work to ensure compliance of the CT State statute regarding Massage Therapy.  As a profession we have a much larger voice in both local and state issues than an individual therapist. There are many issues that as a profession we must take an active role in resolving.

The quickly growing problem of unlicensed people providing massage in CT is forefront in the work of this Team. We believe that the enforcement of our State Licensing Law will best be done with a concerted and cooperative effort at the State and local levels as well as involvement of local Massage Therapists. As more towns are either developing new or modifying current out dated ordinances LOT is available as a consultant. It is our desire to assist towns in developing ordinances that:
            : are pro-massage
: are in compliance with state statue regarding massage therapy
            : are enforceable
: have realistic and significant consequences if not followed

GOAL:

To identify, reduce and ideally eliminate non-licensed massage activities in nail salons, hair salons, spas and other service businesses.

OBJECTIVES:

  1. Streamline the procedure for reporting unlicensed persons or businesses providing massage at the state and local level.
  2. Develop on-line access to review status and progress of LOT-CT activities.
  3. Work to ensure that consequences of violations of CT License and local ordinances are enforced.
  4. Educate the community about how to seek out licensed massage therapists.

Local ordinances: click here for a summary of a local ordinance or to access the entire ordinance. Ordinances are listed by town.

Model ordinance: with the 2008 change in the CT State statute regulating massage many local ordinances are incompatible with the current state statute. Currently a massage therapy license in required to perform massage in the state. Equally important is the recent clause that requires anyone that advertises or uses the word massage also requires a CT State massage license.  Many towns are either updating antiquated ordinances or developing new ones.
