From Last Year's Workshop:

Congrats to all the new members of the award-winning AMTA Sports Massage Team!

Thanks once again to the generosity of the CT AMTA Chapter and their commitment of giving back to the membership, 22 LMT’s were able to participate in a two-day, 16 CEU, Sports Massage Team Certification Workshop at a discounted cost.

On October 30 th and 31 st, Sports Team Directors Richard Testa and Laura Stevenson-Flom shared their expertise and experiences with the therapists gathered at the beautiful and convenient Studio at Billings Forge in Hartford. The men and women came from throughout the state, with a variety of backgrounds and training. Many had private practices, some worked in spas and others were fresh out of school. Many were CCMT graduates while others came from Branford Hall, but the common denominator was that all were interested in the protocols, procedures and precision of working at a sporting event.

At the end of the two day event, friendships were made, networking accomplished, lots of fun was had and best of all… the CT Sports Massage Team had 22 well trained, energetic and enthusiastic, new Team Members!

We send out a special thanks to our classroom assistants: Deborah Testa and Lindsay Callicutt Kondratowicz. We couldn’t have done it without you!

Some comments from the participants:

Great refresher on event work and stretching!

Loved hearing about Richard and Laura’s “real life” stories!

It was great having Deb and Lindsey there to help.

Can’t wait to be a part of the National Sports Team of the Year!

One of the best in the country, the CT Sports Massage Team provides a broad range of volunteer opportunities specifically around sporting events. Providing Event Sports Massage throughout Connecticut, we have promoted a high-profile presence of the AMTA within the athletic community. This has allowed for the creation of relationships with other organizations and education of the general public.

To participate with the CT Sports Massage Team you need to be an AMTA CT Chapter Member with a current CT license and have at least 14 hours of event sports massage training. To earn a “Red Shirt” and be an official member of this award winning team you need also to commit to participation in two events per season or coordinate one event per season. (see the Sports Team Calendar for 2010 Events)

Out of State participants

If you are an AMTA member belonging to another Chapter you can still participate with the CT Sports Massage Team. You must provide confirming documentation of meeting the requirements to practice in your home state and have had at least 14 hours of event sports massage training. Just contact our Sports Team Director as sportsteam@amtactchapter.org to arrange your participation.

Interested in Becoming Part of the Sports Team?

Any member of the Ct. Chapter of the American Massage Therapy Association can become a member of the Ct. Sports Massage Team. The procedure to gain membership status is simple: fill out a membership form and participate in two team sponsored events per year or coordinate one event per year. Each therapist must completed at least 40 hours in sports Massage education or attend a Ct. Chapter sponsored workshop on event sports massage. All member must show a current Ct. License and hold liability insurance.

Student InvolvementHartford Marathon

Students are a large part of the Ct. Sports Massage Team program. By participating at events alongside licensed therapists students have an excellent opportunity to learn in real life situations. It is important that students be appropriately trained for this work.

It is the policy of the CT Sports Team to allow participation by students that are currently enrolled in a sports Massage class and have current liability coverage through their massage school. this is secondary to the liability taken on by both the AMTA and individual at each event.

Hartford MarathonGeneral Volunteers

Periodically the sports massage team utilizes other general volunteers. These individuals may be family members or volunteers assigned to the massage tent. they can be utilized to assist in signing athletes in, getting needed supplies and being an all around "gopher" for the event coordinator. The use of these volunteers is completely at the discretion of the Event Coordinator for any given event.
